Call to Renewal Principles of Education

Call to Renewal of Summit County
P.O. Box 434, Akron, Ohio 44309             330 535-2787

Principles Relating to Education of Children and Issue 6

  1. Commitment to the fulfillment of every child’s God-given potential. Every person has a right to become a participating member in society. Education is a key to that participation at a meaningful level. The district has improved - moving 2 notches up. It has been showing a steady improvement - and we need to keep the momentum going for the sake of all our children.
  2. Human Dignity. All students have a right to be treated with dignity. Having a safe and updated learning environment that encourages proper development and learning sends the message that all our children are important. There have been great strides in meeting the needs of the children.
  3. Safe and caring schools. Safety is important if learning is to take place in our schools. Updated labs and technology brings vision to education. Well-trained teachers and reasonably sized classes facilitate learning and challenge students to do their best. Money from the levy goes right into student services: teaching and programs that equip children for higher education.
  4. The Common Good. Good schools with high standards challenge our students to do their best, but also promote Ohio as a good place to live and raise a family. All of us benefit when we provide a good education for all our children. With such a high number of children (58%) living in poverty in the city, education is very important.
  5. Commitment to end racism in our schools and communities. As people of faith, we see racism as sin. If we are all going to live in harmony, there needs to be an understanding of our commonality and a healthy respect for our cultural gifts. We cannot allow some schools to deteriorate just because they are located in poor urban or rural settings.
  6. Participation of all people at all levels. For good effective schools, families need to be involved in all aspects of the educational process and participate in showing their child that an education is an important value. For good, effective schools are also a partnership of all segments of society: the family, the school community, the working community, and the faith community.
  7. Adequate funding of public schools. The public schools were set up as the means for society to educate our children and develop good contributing citizens. Through public schools, the majority of society realizes their God-given potential. Thus, it is the obligation of our community, state, and nation to support its public schools.
  8. Accountability as a stewardship principle. All those in policy-making positions have a responsibility to be good stewards of community resources. We are given this world by a benevolent Creator and are asked to be responsible in our use of creation. Accountability must be given to all the citizens, especially the most vulnerable, our children. When we deprive children of a decent education in a safe environment, we strip them of their opportunities. The schools have trimmed millions from their budget. It is a much leaner district. They have kept their promises to the community.

The success of our schools, community and neighborhoods — not to mention our personal investments and commitments — are at stake. We need issue 14 to protect what we have and to move Akron into the future.

Every single vote counts! Each of us must play a part; we can't have free riders. At $7 per month on the average home, the price is right. Please, after no new levy since 2006, we respectfully ask you to be an "APS Voter" in 2011.

There is so much at stake — for all of us. Education matters.
