Akron Pre-Engineering Students Welcome Gov. Taft

Akron pre-engineering students welcome Gov. Taft

Wednesday, October 4, 2006 ― When Gov. Bob Taft comes to town for the state's annual Project Lead The Way conference on Monday, October 16, he will pay visits to several Akron public schools to observe the district's outstanding high school pre-engineering programs and middle school Gateway To Technology program.

Gov. Taft's visit begins with a 9 a.m. stop at Litchfield Middle School to observe the Gateway To Technology program. Gateway To Technology develops and hones math, science and technology skills and enables students to enter high school with a foundation of knowledge and skills for the high school-level pre-engineering program – Project Lead The Way. Although not intended as an introduction to Project Lead The Way, many schools report improved interest in the high school program because of GTT. Litchfield's Gateway To Technology program was one of the first in the state of Ohio. Roswell Kent Middle School began a GTT program this year.

After a short visit at Litchfield, Gov. Taft will move next door to Firestone High School to observe a Project Lead The Way class. Project Lead The Way is a pre-engineering program designed to increase both the quality and quantity of engineering students. Akron is the only urban district in the state to be fully accredited in Project Lead The Way at the secondary level.

At approximately 10 a.m., a press conference will take place at Firestone, as Gov. Taft presents the school with its national certification recognition.

At 10:30 a.m., Gov. Taft will head to Garfield High School for his final school visit of the morning where he will again observe Project Lead The Way in action.

Project Lead The Way is partnered with High Schools That Work, a national program that aids students in mastering rigorous academic and career education standards. High Schools That Work recognized all seven of Akron's high schools for outstanding achievement. The schools ranked in the top 100 high schools out of 1,028 schools in 32 states. Akron Public Schools is the largest and only district in Ohio to have all of its high schools ranked in the top 100.

Litchfield Middle School is located at 1540 Fairfax Road. Firestone High School is located at 333 Rampart Ave. Garfield High School is located at 435 N. Firestone Blvd.
