Comments on Behalf of the Catholic Commission

COMMENTS IN SUPPORT OF AKRON PUBLIC SCHOOLS
BALLOT ISSUE #6
BY ROSE JURIGA, CHAIR, CATHOLIC COMMISSION

As the official social action arm of the Cleveland Catholic Diocese, the Catholic Commission voted to support Issue #6 several weeks ago. The children of Akron deserve a well-rounded education to prepare them for the jobs of today and tomorrow. These children must look to us as adults to do the right thing. That "right thing" is support our public education system and provide children with the necessary academic, music, arts, and sports programs that shape them for adulthood and contributing members of society. Our public school system's fundamental purpose is to educate our young people to empower them to work and to assist them to live productive lives.

As adults of faith, we have a fundamental obligation to provide the resources, in this case our “yes vote for Issue 6” and the necessary money so that our public schools can fulfill its purpose. The amount of money requested is not that great for many people; in some cases it will mean some sacrifice. Our public schools have a record of academic effectiveness and prudent use of tax dollars. The Catholic Commission urges the voters of Akron to support Issue 6 on November 7th so that all children can receive the education they deserve.

The success of our schools, community and neighborhoods — not to mention our personal investments and commitments — are at stake. We need issue 14 to protect what we have and to move Akron into the future.

Every single vote counts! Each of us must play a part; we can't have free riders. At $7 per month on the average home, the price is right. Please, after no new levy since 2006, we respectfully ask you to be an "APS Voter" in 2011.

There is so much at stake — for all of us. Education matters.
