Issue 6 Talking Points

Akron's economy cannot work without good schools.

  • Children are the future of our city.
  • Having a well-educated workforce is important to attracting and keeping businesses and jobs in Akron.
  • Issue 6 funds teachers, textbooks, tutors and technology to teach job skills.
  • Without Issue 6, Akron cannot prepare an educated workforce.

We promised, we delivered. The district met or exceeded the 2001 contract goals by 2004, and we are still honoring those goals today.

  • Moved up in every academic area
  • Streamlined administrative operations and cut jobs
  • Appointed oversight committee to monitor spending
  • Did not seek new levy until every component of Contract was met

Akron schools have cut over $40 million from the budget.

  • If Issue 6 fails, it will be necessary to cut $40 million more.
  • Hundreds of our best teachers will be lost.
  • No up-to-date textbooks or technology students need to prepare for jobs
  • Art, music and sports, and academic programs will be cut.
  • If Issue 6 loses, every school loses; and Akron loses.

State money could not help Akron for several years.

  • Even dramatic changes at the state level would not have an impact at the local level for several years.
  • If we wait, our schools will have lost all quality.

Condition of schools puts community at risk.

  • Good schools are vital to a strong city.
  • Businesses can't grow without an educated workforce.
  • Job market, neighborhoods and home values are at risk.
  • Crime increases.

When Issue 6 wins, all of Akron wins. Education must come first.

  • Education must come first.
  • Akron's workforce and economic future hang in the balance.
  • Issue 6 protects our educational programs and our children's future.
  • Issue 6 keeps Akron's economy and neighborhoods strong.

Please Vote FOR Issue 6 on November 7.
